A popular fad among many web designers today is to use Wordpress for business websites. Wordpress is a blogging program that many web designers now use as a platform to make business websites.

I can see only two reasons why a web designer would do this:

  1. They don't want to put forth the effort to make a real business website.
  2. They don't know how to make a real business website.

Below is a security advisory that I received at the time of this writing:

Security Advisory

Date Reported: 29 Oct 2015
Affected Packages: Wordpress
Vulnerable: Yes

More information:

Several vulnerabilities were discovered in Wordpress, a web blogging tool. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project identifies the following problems:

  • SQL Injection allowed a remote attacker to compromise the site.
  • The robustness of the shortcodes HTML tags filter has been improved. The parsing is a bit more strict, which may affect your installation.
  • A cross-site scripting vulnerability when processing shortcode tags.
  • A vulnerability has been discovered, allowing users without proper permissions to publish private posts and make them sticky.
  • An attacker could lock a post that was being edited.
  • Cross-site scripting in a widget title allows an attacker to steal sensitive information.
  • Fix some broken links in the legacy theme preview.
  • A cross-site scripting vulnerability in user list tables.

The above security advisory is a common occurrence. Wordpress sites are constantly getting attacked and hacked, and in response Wordpress constantly releases updates to fix vulnerabilities in their codes.

The reason why Wordpress is always under attack by hackers is because it is very popular. Many people use it because it is free and easy to set up. Wordpress allows people with no experience, skill or knowledge in web design, web development and web programming to have a blogging website where they can share their thoughts with the world. Many individuals have left Wordpress for Facebook and web designers have picked up where they have left off.

Hackers enjoyed annoying bloggers by breaking into their blog and wiping out all their data and replacing it with porn and pharmaceutical items like Viagra. Now that Wordpress is being used for business websites hackers take even greater pleasure in destroying businesses. Imagine what would happen to your online reputation if people went to your business website and saw porn and pills. And who knows how long it would be before you or your web maintenance company caught this disaster and took the site down before further damage could be done to your business.

Wordpress is a free downloadable open-source program. Anyone, including hackers can download Wordpress and view all of its source code. The source code is what makes Wordpress. This is equivalent to you advertising the location of your safe along with the combination.

In the client's Wordpress control panel, they will often see a message telling them to update their Wordpress version (to fix vulnerabilities), along with this message:

Important: before updating, please back up your database and files.

They warn people to backup their files and databases before updating, because since the first Wordpress version there has ALWAYS been problems following an update.

A Wordpress business website is going to cost you a substantial amount of money for the website and the monthly maintenance contract. The monthly maintenance contract will be necessary to keep your Wordpress business website operational and to try and keep it from being hacked so your site isn't used to deliver porn and Viagra to your visitors.

I understand the advantages to web designers that use Wordpress to make business websites:

  • It's free.
  • It requires very little work to set a website up.
  • Will require an expensive maintenance contract.
  • Great profit potential.

But I also know the disadvantages of a Wordpress site for business owners:

  • It's expensive - initially and ongoing.
  • They don't always rank well in searches.
  • There is a great risk of the client's online reputation being ruined by hackers.
